With the summer season comes the potential for devastating wildfires. Unfortunately, the province of British Columbia is experiencing an unprecedented wildfire season, causing over 426,000 hectares to be scorched since April 2017. Tens of thousands of residents have been displaced, evacuated or on evacuation watch since fire season has started. The emotional, financial and health tolls that these fires have taken on the residents, fire fighters and aid workers is devastating – there are over 3800 firefighters and responders working to fight the fire and assist displaced residents and the BC Wildfire Service has spent $122 million dollars fighting this wildfire season as of the end of July. Not to mention the financial costs associated with being evacuated, losing your home, belongings and other assets. With a string of hot weather in the forecast, it doesn’t seem like BC will get the rainfall help they need.
